Cookies

A cookie is a small piece of text a site asks your browser to keep and hand back on the next request. Most of what follows is about scripts rather than cookies as such, because a script that reports your visit to a third party is the thing worth deciding about, whether or not it stores anything on your device.

What is set before you decide

One cookie, and only after you answer the banner.

unpolished_consent holds your answer, and nothing else: which categories you allowed, and the version of the banner you answered. It is set by this site, is read only by this site, and expires after six months, at which point the banner asks again. No script is loaded on the strength of it and no third party ever sees it.

Until you answer, nothing is stored at all. Closing the banner without answering is a refusal, and refusing costs you nothing: every page reads the same either way.

What is set once you accept

Accepting loads three scripts. Each is separately switchable in the cookie settings, reachable from the footer of any page.

Google Analytics 4

Loaded from googletagmanager.com. It measures which pages are read and how readers arrive.

• _ga recognises a returning browser. It lasts two years.
• _ga_ followed by this property's measurement id without its G- prefix holds the session state. It lasts two years.

Microsoft Clarity

Loaded from clarity.ms. It records how a page is used, and aggregates that into heatmaps and pointer replays.

• _clck ties this browser to a Clarity user id. It lasts one year.
• _clsk groups the page views of one visit into a session. It lasts one day.

Clarity may set further cookies of its own. The list above is the set Microsoft documents, and it is theirs to change rather than ours; if you want the authoritative version, theirs is the one to read.

Cloudflare Web Analytics

Loaded from cloudflareinsights.com. It counts page views without setting a cookie of any kind and without building an identifier for a returning visitor. It sits behind the same gate as the other two regardless, because the point of the gate is the reporting, not the storage.

Changing your mind

Cookie settings in the footer of every page reopens the banner with your current answer showing. Turning one off stops it from that moment, clears the cookies this site can reach, and reloads the page so nothing already loaded keeps running.

Your browser can do the same job more bluntly, and its settings will let you block or delete cookies for this site or for every site. Doing that will not break anything here. There is nothing on this site that needs a cookie to work.

What is not here

No advertising, no ad network, no conversion pixel, no social embed that carries a tracker, and nothing sold or handed to a data broker. If that changes, this page changes first.
